A common problem - removing a sheared off post or MRWA brittle plastic cuff means having to jackhammer out the concrete and this is costly - so many remain the concrete creating a major litigation risk.

PROBLEM 19 POSTS REMOVED BY VANDALS

This is costing councils and road authorities millions with one Queensland council replacing 16 signs almost every weekend due to vandalism. Items in metal sockets (mrwa bollards) are most vulnerable

PROBLEM 20 POSTS DIFFICULT TO REMOVE

Posts embedded in concrete are difficult to remove so often we see items no longer in use, but left in the concrete foundation (such as here, we see posts with no signs).

If no longer in use, you simply remove the signpost and cap off the ground socket (cap supplied).

PROBLEM 21 OPERATING HEAVY EQUIPMENT

Replacing road-side items embedded in concrete or in areas with a limestone base, requires jackhammers and heavy equipment and associated repairs which are dangerous to use in public spaces and in bad weather

As concrete will not set in the rain, delays in winter (when replacing damaged road-side items is even more important) are common and pose a serious litigation risk (and using electrical equipment in rain is asking for trouble)

PROBLEM 26 BOLLARDS VULNERABLE TO DAMAGE

In order to ensure foundations are not dislodged when a bollard is impacted you need to make them very large and this is problematic as you run into underground services. But sadly when impacted, either the bollard or foundations will be damage and both will need replacing impact after impact, year after year.

By installing bollards using the Smart Impact Recovery System both the bollard and surrounding foundations become re-usable impact after impact

PROBLEM 27  BOLLARDS NOT IMPACT RESISTANT

Replacing bollards and the surrounding foundations every time they are badly impacted costs thousands and over the life of a development one bollard can cost millions

PROBLEM 28 CHEAP BOLLARDS - NOT SO CHEAP !!!

This is a good example of whole of life costing. Buy a cheap $20 bollard  (some people think they are actually saving money doing this) but this little bollard required four people, digging, concreting and brick-paving, dosposal of carbon waste and expensive traffic management (notice variables message sign mounted on vehicle in the background and traffic management staff) and its on a busy corner so this is a regular event! Your guess is as good as mine but I'd say more than a thousand dollars per replacement.

PROBLEM 29 SURFACE MOUNT BOLLARDS

This is a newly installed bollard. Like most surface mount bollards it is not made to withstand impact yet this company put hundreds throughout a car-park! A  nightmare for the poor maintenance manager as almost every bollard in the car-park was out of alignment within 3-4 weeks.

Highly vulnerable to impact these bollards are causing a major problem as cars are driving into the bay before realizing there's a bollard!

PROBLEM 31 SIGNS 650 DEEP 

Posts in paved areas are expensive to install, expensive to maintain, and cause major damage to surrounding traffic islands, footpaths and paving when impacted. MRWA States the footing should be 650 mm deep- very dangerous for installers and maintenance staff

PROBLEM 49 BOLLARDS TO STOP A VEHICLE

Until now the ONLY way to stop a vehicle was to install a large steel bollard in a massive concrete foundation at least 1 metre deep and fill it with concrete. This is extremely expensive and despite all this hard work- this can still happen when impacted (which is actually preferable to the bolllard bending as either way this base would need replacing)!
